About this book

What if reality begins with things that have no parts, no size, and no shape?

In The Monadology, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz builds a picture of reality from simple, indivisible units called monads. Each is unique and always changing. Through ninety brief numbered paragraphs, he asks what the world is made of and how minds belong within it.

From perception and desire to souls and degrees of awareness, Leibniz follows the inner life of these strange units. He also sets out principles of reasoning and argues that God chooses the best possible world. The challenge is to see how separate monads can form a shared reality.

What you’ll discover

  • Reality without parts Explore Leibniz’s claim that compound things lead us toward simple units with no divisible parts.
  • An inner world Follow perception and appetition into his account of what happens within each monad.
  • Degrees of awareness Consider how Leibniz distinguishes souls and minds through the clarity of their perceptions.
  • The grounds of reasoning Examine the principles Leibniz places beneath reasoning, beginning with the principle of contradiction.
  • A world worth questioning Weigh his claim about the best possible world against questions about a shared reality.

Who will love it

For readers who love metaphysics, the history of philosophy, and tight arguments about mind and reality. It also suits anyone curious about the roots of modern thinking about mind and the meeting of science and faith.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

The world is built from simple units

Leibniz begins with a plain observation. Some things are compound, made of parts. If so, there must be simple things, without parts, from which compounds are made. He calls these simple things monads, from a Greek word meaning unity or one.

What is the Monadology about?

It describes a world made of simple, partless units called monads, each with its own inner life of perception. Leibniz uses this idea to explain mind, matter, God, and why the world is ordered as it is.

What is a monad in Leibniz's philosophy?

A monad is a simple substance with no parts, size, or shape. It cannot be split, changes only from within, and reflects the whole universe from its own point of view through perception.

When did Leibniz write the Monadology?

He wrote it in 1714, in French, for Prince Eugene of Savoy. It was not published in his lifetime, and the text became widely known only after his death in 1716.
