About this book
What happens to love when a careless word can turn trust into danger?
In Love and Liberty, Alexandre Dumas brings private passions into the upheaval of the French Revolution. France moves from absolute monarchy toward a republic, and old privilege gives way to untested ideas of citizenship. Against this shifting ground, love and loyalty become urgent choices, not comforts anyone can safely take for granted.
Dumas mixes history with invented lives, bringing a country's turmoil close through personal fears and hopes. Neighbors watch one another, allies grow suspicious, and words can reach the wrong ears. Fast scenes, action, and talk carry the tension as divided hearts face public causes. The question is not simply what freedom promises, but what it may cost.

In short

Dumas wrote in the nineteenth century, when the Revolution was still a living memory in French families and a favorite subject for storytellers.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A nation in upheaval is the stage
A novel of the French Revolution takes place in one of the most disturbed periods in European history. Within a few years, France moved from an absolute monarchy to a republic, from old privilege to new and untested ideas of citizenship. Ordinary life was caught up in all of it. Streets, markets, prisons and meeting halls became places where the future of the country was argued and fought over.
Dumas knew this setting well. He grew up in the years after the Revolution and the wars that followed, and his own father had served as a general in the revolutionary armies. That family background gave him a strong sense of the era as something lived, not just read about in books.
