About this book
What if a letter preserves a hidden gospel—or leaves us with a mystery no scholar can settle?
Secret Gospel of Mark explores a disputed text known only through a letter attributed to Clement of Alexandria. Addressing Theodore, the letter quotes two short passages from a longer Gospel of Mark. According to the letter, this gospel serves advanced students in the church of Alexandria, rather than a wider audience.
In one quoted passage, Jesus raises a young man from the dead; a nighttime lesson follows. This summary examines what the letter claims, how Morton Smith finds its copy at Mar Saba in 1958, and why scholars disagree about its origins. Is it an ancient witness or a later creation? No settled verdict resolves the question.

A letter found in a desert monastery
The story begins at Mar Saba, an Orthodox monastery in the hills east of Jerusalem, founded in the fifth century. In the summer of 1958, Morton Smith, then a young scholar at Columbia University, was cataloguing the monastery's manuscripts. He had permission to work in its tower library.
At the back of a printed book he noticed handwriting on the blank endpages. The book was a 1646 edition of the letters of Ignatius of Antioch, edited by Isaac Voss. The handwriting was in Greek, and Smith dated it to the eighteenth century. It copied out a letter that began with the name of Clement of Alexandria.

What is the Secret Gospel of Mark?
It is a longer version of the Gospel of Mark, described in a letter attributed to Clement of Alexandria. The letter quotes two short passages from it. No full copy is known, and scholars debate whether the letter is ancient.
Who found the Secret Gospel of Mark?
Morton Smith, a scholar at Columbia University, found the letter in 1958 at the Mar Saba monastery near Jerusalem. He saw it copied on the blank pages of a printed book and photographed it. He published it in 1973.
Is the Secret Gospel of Mark a forgery?
Scholars disagree. Some, including Stephen Carlson and Peter Jeffery, argue Morton Smith wrote it. Others defend it as a genuine letter of Clement. Because the original pages are hard to examine, the question remains open for some.
