Papias, a Christian bishop of Hierapolis, gathers traditions from people who knew the apostles. His words reach us through later writers, above all Eusebius and Irenaeus, leaving readers to piece together what survives.

These fragments explore how Mark and Matthew came to be written, why Papias values spoken memories, and how he pictures the coming kingdom. According to his reports, Mark records Peter's recollections and Matthew gathers the Lord's sayings in Hebrew. Alongside these accounts stand strange traditions, visions of abundance, and questions that historians still debate.

Inside this book

Memories behind Mark – Explore the report linking Mark's Gospel to Peter's recollections, preserved through Eusebius.

A sentence about Matthew – Consider Papias's brief account of sayings gathered in Hebrew and interpreted by others.

The elders' living voice – Meet a writer who prizes spoken testimony from those connected with the apostles.

A kingdom of abundance – Discover the vivid hopes for the coming kingdom that Irenaeus preserves from Papias.

A historian's unfinished puzzle – Weigh surviving words alongside the judgments of later writers, including the sharply critical Eusebius.

Perfect for readers curious about early Gospel traditions and anyone who enjoys a historian's puzzle rather than a continuous narrative.

Open the first page and begin tracing the voices behind these surviving fragments.

https://libraryofalexandria.com/de/products/loa-papias-expositions-of-the-sayings-of-the-lord-large-print
