About this book
Why do the faithful suffer while the empires that crush them prosper?
The Second Book of Esdras gives that question to Ezra, a scribe grieving Jerusalem’s fall. Speaking in his name, this anonymous apocalypse places him in Babylon, where he presses the angel Uriel for answers about suffering, justice, and why so few are saved.
Its Jewish core, also called Fourth Ezra, contains seven visions filled with argument, grief, and startling images. Later Christian additions, Fifth and Sixth Ezra, frame this central work. According to the text, Ezra encounters a mourning woman, an eagle of empire facing judgment, and a man who rises from the sea.

In short
What do you say to God when your city lies in ashes? The writer of The Second Book of Esdras speaks in the name of the scribe Ezra, and he offers no quick comfort.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Grief after Rome burned the Temple shaped this book
The Second Book of Esdras is not one book written at one time. Chapters 3 to 14 are the original work, a Jewish apocalypse often named Fourth Ezra, dated to roughly 100 CE. The Hebrew or Aramaic original is lost.
The author writes in the voice of Ezra, the scribe who helped rebuild Jewish life after the Babylonian exile. Using an ancient name was a recognised literary habit. Ezra is placed thirty years after the first fall of Jerusalem, yet the pain on the page belongs to the writer's own day. The Temple had stood at the centre of worship and national pride. Its loss raised the question of what God had promised.

What is the Second Book of Esdras about?
It presents Ezra, thirty years after Jerusalem's fall, questioning God about suffering and justice. An angel answers him, and visions follow: a woman who becomes the city of Zion, an eagle, a man from the sea, and the writing of lost books.
Is 2 Esdras the same as 4 Ezra?
The core, chapters 3 to 14, is called Fourth Ezra by scholars. Chapters 1 and 2 and chapters 15 and 16 are later Christian additions, sometimes named Fifth and Sixth Ezra, and the Latin tradition joins all sixteen as one book.
Who wrote 2 Esdras and when?
The author is unknown. Most scholars date the core to about 100 CE, a generation after the Temple fell in 70 CE. The writer used Ezra's name, a common practice in apocalyptic writing, to speak about his own time.
