About this book
Step into a Germany of legend, where folklore and myth offer another way to imagine a nation.
German Legends brings together German legends, folklore, and mythic tales in a collection by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm. Here, the invitation is to explore a nation through its stories. Read for the tales themselves, or for the ways they invite you to imagine the world they belong to.
First published in 1816, this collection places German storytelling at its heart. Its focus offers a path for anyone curious about myths and legends: not a single continuous story, but a gathering of tales to explore, one after another, with room to pause and let each one linger.

In short
Imagine a lake that turns blood red on one day each year, or a rock that still shows a footprint. German Legends gathers well over three hundred short tales, collected by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early nineteenth century.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Miners meet the spirits under the mountain
The book opens underground. Three miners of Kuttenberg in Bohemia go into the mountain each morning with prayer books, lamps and a little bread. One evening the mountain collapses and seals the entrance. They expect to starve, yet they keep digging and praying, and the lamp and bread seem never to run down.
The Mountain Spirit, called Master Hämmerling or the Mountain Monk, appears as a huge figure in a black monk's dress. Two Harz miners find their lamps short of oil. He pours oil into their lamps and does more work in an hour than they could do in a week. Then he strikes the wall, and a passage glittering with gold and silver opens.
