About this book

What happens when Earth no longer belongs to the people who depend on it?

In The Death of the Earth, J.-H. Rosny aîné imagines a distant world where seas shrink and rivers vanish. The last humans gather around a few remaining oases. Among them is Targ, a thoughtful man who watches his people dwindle as the water that sustains them slowly fails.

But the drying planet is not empty of possibility. The ferromagnetals, strange beings tied to metal and magnetic force, begin to stir as familiar life declines. Targ tries to understand these newcomers. Can humans communicate with life so unlike themselves, and can they imagine a world in which they are no longer central?

A watchman hears that the earth is moving

The novel opens in an oasis called the High Springs, in a far future when the oceans are gone. Targ, the watchman at the Great Planetary, loves the green plants that still grow there. The Planetary is a huge bowl of arcum that catches signals from other oases. Silver birds with human eyes have learned a simple language, and one morning they warn him that the ground will shake.

What is The Death of the Earth about?

It follows Targ, a watchman among the last humans, in a far future when Earth has almost no water. He searches for new springs while the planet shakes and a new life form made of iron spreads.

What are the ferromagnetals in The Death of the Earth?

They are living beings made only of iron, which first appear on metal that humans have used. They multiply as humanity fades, drink red blood cells from anyone who lingers near them, and may be the next kingdom of life.

Who is Targ?

Targ is the watchman of the Great Planetary at the High Springs oasis. He is unusual among the Last Men because he dreams of returning water and the start of a new age, and acts on that hope.
