About this book
What happens when a priest’s longing for perfect purity meets a garden alive with forbidden love?
In Émile Zola’s Abbé Mouret’s Transgression, Serge Mouret serves Les Artaud, a poor village on the bare hills of Provence. His devotion to the Virgin Mary fills his life, but his parishioners care little for church. He seeks purity through prayer and self-denial, until fasting and strain bring him to a grave illness. His body can no longer bear what he asks of it.
Beyond the village lies the Paradou, a wild garden enclosed by walls. Here lives Albine, lively and barefoot, who wants to love and be loved. As Serge’s story enters her world, Zola brings sacred vows and human desire into conflict. The harsh church and the lush garden offer rival ways of living, and neither leaves the young priest’s deepest hopes untouched.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A poor Mass while May storms the church
The book opens with a Mass, told almost step by step. The old servant La Teuse limps through the church and scolds everyone in sight. Abbé Mouret, twenty-six, puts on each vestment with a prayer.
The church is poor. Its windows are cracked and its walls look like those of a stable. As the service goes on, the sun climbs, a rowan tree pushes branches through the broken panes, and sparrows hop between the benches. When his sister Desirée bursts in with newly hatched chicks in her apron, the smell of the farmyard blows across the altar. Still the priest does not look up.

What is Abbé Mouret's Transgression about?
It is about Serge Mouret, a devout young priest in a poor village who falls ill, is nursed back to health in a hidden garden by a girl named Albine, and must decide between love and his vows.
What is the Paradou?
The Paradou is a huge walled park near the village, abandoned for a century and overgrown with roses, orchards, meadows and forest. Albine and her uncle Jeanbernat live at its edge, and the garden stands for nature itself.
Is Abbé Mouret's Transgression part of a series?
Yes. Zola wrote it in 1875 as one novel in the Rougon-Macquart series, which follows one family across generations. Serge's uncle Doctor Pascal and other relatives are members of that family, but the book can be read on its own.
