About this book
In a world of chiefs and warriors, one woman's beauty and ambition can be as dangerous as war.
In H. Rider Haggard's Child of Storm, Allan Quatermain looks back on his youth in southern Africa. The practical hunter and trader moves among the Zulu people and their rulers. He watches a world of royal courts, soldiers and healers—and finds himself drawn into its struggles.
At the center stands Mameena, a beautiful, sharp-witted woman who pursues her own aims among powerful men. Saduko binds his hopes to her, while kings and warriors consult the feared wizard Zikali. Love, ambition and betrayal meet in an adventure where desire brings danger and fate shadows human plans.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A hunter hears of a girl called Storm
Allan Quatermain, an English trader and hunter, looks back on 1854 and promises to tell the story of the most beautiful, capable and wicked woman he ever met among the Zulus. Her name is Mameena, and her second name is Child of Storm, because she was born on the night of a great wind.
He is hunting near the Umvolosi rivers with a fat, boastful chief named Umbezi, who accidentally shoots a piece off his wife's ear. Umbezi mentions Mameena, his eldest daughter, and the young warrior Saduko, who loves her. Umbezi says he will not hand her over for less than a hundred cattle, and he doubts that Mameena loves anyone but herself.

Who is Mameena in Child of Storm?
Mameena is the daughter of the chief Umbezi, a woman of striking beauty and a sharp mind. Her name Mameena comes from the sound of wind around her birthplace. Her second name is Child of Storm. Quatermain compares her to Helen of Troy.
