About this book
What if the price of love is the self-respect you have fought all your life to keep?
Jane Eyre is an unwanted orphan with a sharp mind and a fierce sense of fairness. From Mrs Reed’s cold household to the hunger and hardship of Lowood School, she faces people who expect obedience and gratitude. In Charlotte Brontë’s novel, Jane tells her own story, speaking directly to the reader about her need for kindness, work and dignity.
At Thornfield Hall, Jane becomes a governess and meets Edward Rochester, the restless master of the house. Their evening conversations draw them closer, but Rochester carries a past he avoids discussing. A strange laugh and smoke in the night deepen the unease. As affection grows, Jane must weigh her longing for love against the demands of her conscience.

A Lonely Child at Gateshead Hall
The story opens at Gateshead Hall in the north of England. Jane Eyre is an orphan, raised in the house of her late uncle's widow, Mrs Reed. Her uncle was the only one who loved her, and he is dead. Now she lives among three Reed children who treat her as an intruder, and a mistress who sees her as a burden she must carry.
The worst of the children is her cousin John Reed, a few years older and much larger. He hits her, mocks her for being poor and tells her she has no right to the books and comforts of the house. One day he throws a heavy book at her head. Jane, who has taken all this in silence for years, finally turns on him and fights back. It is her first act of open rebellion.

What is Jane Eyre about?
It tells the life of an orphan girl, Jane, from her unhappy childhood through a harsh school to her work as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her employer while a mystery grows around the house.
Is Jane Eyre a true story?
No, it is a novel, though it is presented as an autobiography. Brontë drew on her own experiences, especially her time at a harsh clergy daughters' school and her work as a governess. It was published in 1847.
Why did Charlotte Brontë publish under the name Currer Bell?
Charlotte and her sisters used male-sounding pen names, Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, because they feared women writers would not be taken seriously. Their real names became known only after their books were widely read.
