About this book
Beyond a wall of icebound cliffs, a lost world may still hold people who need rescuing.
In Edgar Rice Burroughs’s The People That Time Forgot, a strange manuscript brings doubt and hope to a library in Santa Monica. Bowen Tyler describes Caspak, a prehistoric world within Caprona. He and Miss La Rue are missing, and his account offers a troubling possibility: they may still be alive among creatures that seem to belong to another age.
Tom Billings takes command of a rescue expedition aboard the Toreador. An unreliable map makes Caprona hard to find, while icebergs crowd the surrounding sea. Finding the island is only the beginning. Sheer cliffs block the way into Caspak, and the passage beneath them admits a submarine—not their yacht. Loyalty now demands more than courage; it demands a way inside.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A manuscript sends a rescue south
The first chapter is a frame. A man travels to the Tyler house in Santa Monica to hand Bowen Tyler's manuscript to his father. He doubts it, because Bowen was known at college as a practical joker. While he and the assistant secretary wait for the father's yacht, the Toreador, they talk through the tale of a torpedoed liner, a captured German submarine and the hidden island of Caspak.
Then the telephone rings with news that Mr. Tyler, Sr., has died at sea. His secretary, Tom Billings, takes charge at once. Billings is a former cowhand who rose through the Tyler business and never shirks the hardest job. Within ten days he has organized an expedition of forty people to find Bowen and the girl who sailed with him, Lys La Rue.
