About this book

What if your place in a family depends on a dead man's wish—and the kindness of people who distrust you?

Counselor Vale dies, and his will names Helena as his daughter. She enters a comfortable household outside Rio de Janeiro, carrying a private burden. His son Estácio wants to honor his father's wishes. His sister, Dona Úrsula, watches the newcomer for any fault. A home is offered, but belonging is less certain.

Estácio trusts reason, yet his feelings around Helena begin to trouble him. Eugênia, whom he is expected to marry, senses his attention moving elsewhere. In Helena, Machado de Assis brings love, money and family honor into quiet conflict. Every favor raises a question: what does Helena owe those who give her shelter?
