About this book

What if the voice you most need to trust is the one the crowd tells you to doubt?

In Essays — First Series, Ralph Waldo Emerson asks you to stop borrowing your convictions from others. History opens with his idea of a mind shared by all people. Self-Reliance turns that idea into a personal challenge: trust your own judgment, even when tradition, neighbors, or the fear of inconsistency press you to fall into line.

The collection also includes Compensation, Spiritual Laws, Love, Friendship, Prudence, Heroism, The Over-Soul, Circles, Intellect, and Art. Emerson moves from the costs of pleasure to the demands of human bonds. In The Over-Soul, he describes his belief in a spirit behind all minds. These essays offer bursts of insight rather than a step-by-step argument.

What you’ll discover

  • Courage to trust yourself Self-Reliance challenges the fear of standing apart and asks whose opinions you live by.
  • A mind beyond yourself History invites you to consider what one person can learn from every other mind.
  • The balance of living Compensation explores Emerson’s idea that each gain carries a cost and every act returns.
  • Bonds that test character Love and Friendship turn independent thought toward attraction, affection, and the demands of human connection.
  • An inward spiritual life The Over-Soul explores Emerson’s belief that our best thoughts spring from a shared spirit.

Who will love it

You will love this book if you enjoy bold ideas in vivid sentences, if you ask how to live on your own terms, or if you like to read about friendship, work, art, and conscience.

Every person holds the whole of history within

Emerson opens with a bold claim. There is one mind shared by all people, and each person is a doorway into it. What Plato thought, you can think. What a saint felt, you can feel. History is the record of what this one mind has done.

What is Emerson's Essays First Series about?

It gathers twelve essays on the idea that one mind runs through everyone. Emerson draws from it advice on trusting your own thought, paying for what you gain, loving, befriending, working, and creating art with freedom.

What does Emerson mean by a foolish consistency?

He means sticking to an old opinion just to look steady, or to please those watching. He says a great soul speaks what it thinks now and accepts being misunderstood, since honest actions agree when seen from far enough away.

What is the Over-Soul in Emerson's essay?

It is Emerson's name for the larger Unity within which every individual mind sits. It is not one faculty such as memory or will but a light shining through them, felt in right action and sincere conversation.
