About this book

What if the person arranging everyone’s love life is the last to understand anyone’s heart?

Emma Woodhouse is clever, rich, and certain she knows what is best for her neighbours in Highbury. After her former governess marries, Emma turns her attention to Harriet Smith. She chooses the handsome vicar, Mr Elton, as Harriet’s ideal husband—and trusts her own judgement more than the evidence before her.

In Jane Austen’s romantic comedy, dinners, walks, letters, and conversation give Emma plenty to interpret—and misread. Mr Knightley, an old family friend, is willing to challenge her. As her matchmaking draws other people into her assumptions, questions of class, kindness, and pride make the stakes more personal than she expects.

What you’ll discover

  • Matchmaking gone astray Follow Emma’s confident plans as other people’s wishes refuse to fit her careful arrangements.
  • A heroine with blind spots Enjoy the gap between what Emma believes she sees and what her neighbours actually reveal.
  • Highbury behind its manners Step into dinners, walks, and a ball where small exchanges carry questions of class and marriage.
  • Honesty without flattery Meet Mr Knightley, whose practical fairness challenges Emma’s certainty and asks more of her kindness.
  • Humour with a sharp eye Discover how Austen turns conversation and small mistakes into comedy about pride and self-knowledge.

Is it for you?

This is for anyone who enjoys sharp social comedy, a flawed heroine who learns, and the pleasure of spotting what a character cannot see. It may suit you less if you want fast action, since the story moves through conversation and small events.

The novel opens by telling us that Emma Woodhouse has lived nearly twenty-one years with very little to distress or vex her. She is the younger daughter of Mr Woodhouse, a gentle, anxious man who fears drafts, late nights and any kind of change. Her elder sister, Isabella, has married and moved to London. This leaves Emma as the lady of Hartfield, the first person in the house and one of the first in the neighbourhood.

What is Emma by Jane Austen about?

It follows Emma Woodhouse, a rich, clever young woman in the village of Highbury, who plays matchmaker for her friends. Her confident guesses cause trouble, and she slowly learns to judge people and herself more honestly.

Is Emma a true story and when was it written?

No, it is a work of fiction. Austen wrote it in 1814 and 1815, and it was published in December 1815. The village of Highbury is invented, though its social world reflects real Regency country life.

Who is Mr Knightley in Emma?

Mr Knightley is a sensible landowner of Donwell Abbey and a friend of the Woodhouse family. He is older than Emma and the one person who openly criticises her mistakes, which makes him her moral guide.
