About this book

What if your fight against injustice binds you to people whose cruelty you cannot control?

In Friedrich Schiller’s tragedy The Robbers, Karl Moor longs to leave his reckless life behind and return to his wealthy father and Amalia, the woman he loves. But he believes his father has rejected him. Hurt turns to fury, and Karl joins men who live outside the law, seeking justice while becoming their robber chief.

At home, his younger brother Franz uses deception to gain their father’s power and property. He also pursues Amalia, whose loyalty to Karl resists his pressure. Scenes of broken family trust and conflict within the robber band bring the play’s central question close: can Karl oppose injustice without serving cruelty, or escape one betrayal without committing another?

What is The Robbers about?

The Robbers follows two brothers whose actions tear their family apart. Franz schemes to take Karl's place at home, while Karl becomes the leader of an outlaw band. Their parallel stories test the excuses people make for ambition, revenge, and violence.

Why does Karl Moor become a robber?

Karl becomes a robber after Franz's deception makes him believe his father has rejected him. His wounded love turns into anger at society. Leading an outlaw band seems to offer independence and a way to punish injustice, but it binds him to other men's crimes.

Is The Robbers part of Storm and Stress?

The Robbers is a major work of Storm and Stress, the eighteenth-century German literary movement that prizes strong feeling and challenges established authority. Its rebellious hero, fierce speeches, and conflict between personal freedom and social restraint show those concerns in dramatic form.
