At its heart stands the myth of Demeter, goddess of grain, and her lost daughter Persephone. Their story gives readers a way into rites shaped by grief and hopes about death.

Wright follows the path of initiation, from the springtime Lesser Mysteries to the long procession from Athens and the great hall called the Telesterion. There, a priest known as the hierophant leads the secret ceremony. This short study asks what draws initiates to these rites and what they hope to gain.

What you'll discover

A mother's grief – Explore the myth of Demeter and Persephone that stands at the heart of the mysteries.

The path toward initiation – Follow the newcomer's preparation through the Lesser Mysteries held in spring near Athens.

Inside the sacred hall – Learn about the Telesterion and the hierophant who leads the ceremony within it.

Hope beyond death – Consider the promise of a better afterlife that the rites hold out to initiates.

Ancient accounts gathered – Discover what ancient writers tell us about the festival and those who take part.

Perfect for general readers curious about ancient Greece, comparative religion, or the roots of ideas about the afterlife.

Open the first page and begin with the story at the heart of the rites.
