In short
The Fall of Troy is a Greek epic in fourteen books by Quintus Smyrnaeus. It takes up the story exactly where Homer's Iliad stops, at the funeral of Hector, and carries it forward through the closing events of the war's tenth year.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A warrior queen arrives to save Troy
Book one opens just after Hector's funeral. The Trojans cower inside Priam's city, as cattle hide in thickets from a lion, afraid of the strength of Achilles. They remember every man he killed beside the river Scamander and under the walls. Grief hangs over the town like a dark-winged bird, and nobody dares to meet him in the field.
Then help comes from far away. Penthesileia, queen of the Amazons, leaves the river Thermodon with twelve companions, each of them a princess. She is running from shame as much as marching to war. She killed her own sister Hippolyte by mistake, aiming at a stag, and the Furies now follow her unseen. She hopes a great deed in battle will wash the guilt away.

What is The Fall of Troy about?
It tells what happens after the Iliad ends. Starting from Hector's funeral, it follows the arrival of new allies, the death of Achilles, the quarrel over his armor, and the events that lead to the end of Troy.
Who is Quintus Smyrnaeus?
He is a Greek poet who lived in the Roman era, probably some centuries after Homer. His name points to Smyrna, and in this poem he says that he tended sheep near that city as a young man.
Do I need to read the Iliad first?
No. The poem introduces its characters and their lineage as they appear, and it explains who is who with each new battle. Knowing Homer adds echoes, but the story stands on its own.
