About this book
Step into an Ireland of woodland hermits, legendary warriors, nature songs and voices mourning the dead.
The Poem-Book of the Gael gathers Irish poetry across many centuries, from early monks and hermits to the singers of later days. Editor Eleanor Hull brings these voices together in English, opening a path into Gaelic literature through prayers, nature songs, heroic tales and laments.
Here, short poems turn toward nature and faith, while other verses tell of kings, warriors and lovers. Finn and his band, the Fianna, belong to this world of legend. Rather than following one plot, you move among voices that give devotion, love and grief their own rhythms.

In short
The Poem-Book of the Gael is an anthology of Irish poetry, gathered by Eleanor Hull, a scholar of Irish literature, and published in the early twentieth century. It brings together poems from many centuries, from the earliest monks and hermits to the singers of later days, all presented in English for readers who could not read the Irish originals.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
An editor who loved Irish literature
Eleanor Hull spent much of her working life writing about Irish literature and bringing it to a wider public. She was one of the scholars who helped found the Irish Texts Society, which made old Irish writing available in print. The Poem-Book of the Gael grows out of that same aim.
The book is an anthology, so it has no single author. Hull chose poems from the long tradition of the Gael, the Gaelic-speaking people of Ireland, and set them in English verse. Many different hands worked on the English versions, so the poems carry different styles and sounds from one page to the next.
