About this book
A divided throne turns Spain into a battleground, where political loyalties reach deep into private lives.
In From Oñate to La Granja, Benito Pérez Galdós brings fiction into the real events of Spain’s first Carlist war. Supporters of the young Queen Isabella face those of her uncle, Don Carlos. Isabella’s mother, María Cristina, rules as regent, while the struggle over the throne divides the country.
Oñate, a Basque town linked to Don Carlos’s court and headquarters, stands for Carlist loyalty, piety, and hard mountain fighting. La Granja points toward the royal court. Between these worlds, Galdós places invented people among public figures, joining war and political intrigue with love and private feeling.

A veiled guardian jails her own ward
Fernando Calpena, a young Madrid clerk, sits in the Saladero prison with his chaplain and mentor, Don Pedro Hillo. Both were placed there by an unknown woman who steers Fernando's life from behind a mask. She wants to cure him of his love for Aura, the girl he hopes to marry.
The first nights are wild. Fernando tears at his hair and curses, while Hillo, a priest who dressed as a layman to follow the boy, frets about his ruined name. Then a packet arrives. The woman confesses the whole scheme is hers, promises that no stain will reach Hillo's name, and says Fernando will stay locked up until his fever passes.
