About this book
What remains of love when two people must live apart, but still have words to send each other?
In twelfth-century France, Peter Abelard is an admired teacher of logic and theology in Paris. Heloise is a young woman known for her learning. Their lessons become a love affair, followed by a secret marriage. Writing from separate religious houses, they face questions that neither learning nor devotion can settle: what does love demand, and what can duty ask them to surrender?
The collection opens with Abelard’s Story of My Misfortunes, a long account of his troubles written to console a friend. Letters between Abelard and Heloise follow. She speaks plainly about desire, guilt and grief; he answers with religious guidance rather than equal passion. Their exchange turns toward the needs of her community of nuns, including the question of what rule should guide women.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A famous teacher tells his troubles
The letters begin with Abelard writing to his friend Philintus to console him. Abelard says the best comfort is to compare his sorrows with worse ones. So he tells his own life. It is a memoir in the form of a letter, and it is one of the first of its kind in the Latin West.
He is the eldest son of a knight and gives up a soldier's inheritance for the life of study. He says he preferred the weapons of argument to the weapons of war. He went to Paris and challenged William of Champeaux, a leading master there. Abelard says he beat his teacher in debate and set up his own school, which drew students away.
