About this book
What if the person you trust most is the danger you cannot see?
In Blind Love, a woman's trust stands at the heart of a story where passion, secrets, and danger meet. Wilkie Collins brings romance and crime into an English setting, tying matters of the heart to money and political conspiracy. Love offers a reason to believe, but it can also make doubt feel impossible.
Behind the love story lies the troubled world of Irish unrest and the hidden motives that feed suspense. This is Collins's last novel, a sensation story in which private feelings meet wider dangers. Its central question is intimate and unsettling: what does a woman risk when she gives her trust where she should doubt?

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A teacup, a milestone and a letter
The story opens in 1881 in the Irish town of Ardoon. Sir Giles Mountjoy, a knighted banker, wakes to find an unsigned letter on his table. It claims to concern someone in his own family and sets him two tests. His head clerk, Dennis Howmore, must find a piece of broken teacup behind the first milestone on the road to Garvan.
The second test sends the clerk to the Reading Rooms. There he must look in the third volume of Gibbon for a sheet of paper punched with tiny holes. Dennis takes the sheet to a journalist friend, who explains that it is a key to a cipher. A second letter arrives, written in muddled words, and the holes make it readable.
