In short

  • Dorothy is the Kansas farm girl at the center of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
  • A cyclone carries her house to Oz, where she searches for a way back to Aunt Em.
  • With Toto and three unusual companions, she follows the yellow brick road toward the Emerald City.

Who Dorothy is

Dorothy lives with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on a gray Kansas farm. Her little black dog, Toto, brings play and happiness into her life. When she goes after Toto during a cyclone, the wind lifts their house and carries them to Oz.

What Dorothy wants

Dorothy wants to return home, even when the country around her is beautiful. The Witch of the North tells her to seek help from the Wizard in the Emerald City. Her wish to see Aunt Em again stays steady through the wonders and dangers of the road.

Dorothy and the others in the story

Dorothy helps the Scarecrow down from his pole, and he joins her search for the Wizard. She and the Scarecrow help the rusted Tin Woodman move again by oiling his joints. When the Lion strikes at Toto, Dorothy protects her dog and challenges the much larger creature.

The Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Lion become companions who help one another through danger. Dorothy's kindness and plain speech matter alongside the cleverness, care and courage her friends show.

A best-known line

“There is no place like home.”
