Für wen es gedacht ist

For anyone who wants Kant at his most direct, students of philosophy or politics, and readers who feel pressure to let others decide for them.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

In 1784 a Berlin magazine asked its readers a plain question: what is enlightenment? Immanuel Kant, then a professor at Konigsberg, answered in an essay of only a few pages. It appeared in the Berlinische Monatsschrift in December of that year, during the reign of Frederick the Great of Prussia.

Kant gives a short definition, names what holds people back, and sets out what a society must allow if people are to grow up in their thinking. You get a clear argument about freedom, obedience and the use of your own mind, and some practical advice. Let us begin with his definition and its surprising claim about who is to blame.

Punkt 1 von 4

Immaturity is your own doing

Kant opens by defining enlightenment as a way out of immaturity that people have brought on themselves. Immaturity, he says, is the inability to use your own understanding without direction from someone else. The key word is self-incurred. The fault lies not in a lack of intelligence but in a lack of resolve and courage to think without a guide.

He gives the motto of the age in Latin, Sapere aude, which means dare to know. Kant urges each person to have the courage to use their own understanding. The slogan fits his whole argument, because he treats thinking as an act of will as much as of skill.

Why does he say this matters? Because he thinks most people never use the freedom they could have. They stay in a safe, passive state, and that state feels natural after years of habit. The essay begins by putting the responsibility back on you, before it turns to anyone else.

That’s 1 of 4 key points.

Kant defines enlightenment as a person's emergence from self-incurred immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use your own understanding without another's guidance. It is self-incurred because the cause is a lack of courage and resolve, not a lack of intelligence.

What does Sapere aude mean?

Sapere aude is Latin for dare to know, or have the courage to use your own understanding. Kant makes it the motto of enlightenment. The phrase comes from the Roman poet Horace, and Kant adopts it as a call to think independently.
