Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who love romance with a wide arc, travel across oceans and continents, strong women, children who steal scenes, and heroes who must learn to look at the people they love.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Wanderfoot, also called The Dream Ship, is a romance by Cynthia Stockley that follows a restless woman and a reserved man across two continents. Stockley was born in South Africa and wrote many novels set there. In this book she draws on that world, then carries it to New York, the island of Jersey, Normandy, Paris and the French Riviera.

The story opens on an Atlantic liner. Garrett Westenra, an Irish surgeon in New York, sits at dinner beside Valentine Valdana, a famous journalist who signs her work Wanderfoot. He has dreamed of her face for years, yet he disapproves of nearly everything about her.

The book asks what love costs when two people want different lives. It gives you a sea romance, a household in crisis, a secret that cannot be spoken, and years of wandering with children and friends. It also gives you vivid pictures of Africa, Ireland and the French coast. Let us begin with the meeting on the ship.

A face from a dream at sea

The Bavaric has been four days out from Ireland when we meet Garrett Westenra. He is a thirty-three year old surgeon from New York, and he is in mourning. His mother has died, and he missed her funeral because he was still at sea on his way to visit her. He has no home left in Ireland and no family. All that remains in his life, he feels, is a child who is not his own and a woman who exists only in dreams.

For years he has dreamed of her. She wears a pale grey gown with old lace at the throat and a chain of glowing beads. Her face is faintly Oriental and sad, and her bare feet are stained with mud and blood. He can never keep her face in mind once he wakes.

At dinner a young woman sits beside him. He reads her from her hands, which are brown, nervous and loaded with odd rings. He sees nicotine stains and a writer's callus. When she orders brandy and soda, he decides she is a restless, undisciplined creature who will not last two years.

Then she walks back through the saloon to fetch her bag, and he sees her face. It is the face from his dreams. Later on deck the wind whips her cloak, and she asks if she may share his sheltered corner. She tells him she is wearing grey in mourning for her husband, though they were bitter enemies. Westenra answers her coldly, and the beads at her neck click like dice in the hands of Fate.
