A street boy looks after a miserly old man
Tom Grey is fifteen, strong, and proud of earning his own way. He blacks boots near the Astor House in New York, and with that money he feeds and houses old Jacob, who lives with him and is thought to be his grandfather. Jacob never says so himself, and he never says what first brought the two of them together.
Jacob complains that breakfast costs too much, so Tom buys bread and has kind Mrs. Flanagan, who lives downstairs, cook eggs and coffee. When Tom leaves, the old man bolts the door, lifts a floorboard, and counts the coins in a tin box. He has ninety-nine dollars and wants an even hundred, so he slips out to beg on Broadway. Halfway across the street, stagecoach horses knock him down.
From the first pages, the book sets two kinds of wealth side by side. Jacob hoards money and enjoys none of it. Tom spends his little cheerfully on someone else, and the story keeps asking which of them is truly rich.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
