A miser's will puts a price on marriage

John Hungerford of Baltimore spends fifty years building a fortune. He starts with three thousand dollars and lives in a shabby house with simple habits. The narrator notes that when such a man dies, nobody asks what he was, only what he owned.

He has no son, and the lack stings him more than anything. When his brother's widow in Poppleton writes that her son Eugene cannot afford college, John sends two thousand dollars. Eugene wins the old man's quiet favor without even trying.

After his wife's death, John works two years on a will. Three million dollars goes into trust. Eugene receives the income, but if at thirty he is legally married and the father of a legal son named John Hungerford, he receives the whole sum. Otherwise it splits into six parts. Eugene hates the thought of tying marriage to money, and he resolves not to be bribed into it. A will can set a price, but love refuses to be sold.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
