For readers curious about the roots of psychoanalysis, the history of ideas about sex, or how Freud argued, and anyone interested in his links between childhood and adult desire.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality is a short treatise by Sigmund Freud, the Viennese physician who founded psychoanalysis. It first appeared in 1905, and Freud adds new material in later editions. He draws on clinical experience to explore how human desire forms, from infancy to adult love.
The book gives you the core of Freud's claim in a small space. Sexuality, he argues, is not a switch that turns on at puberty and points one way. It has a long history in the body and the mind, and it can go in many directions. In three essays he looks at unusual forms of desire, at childhood, and at the changes of adolescence. The first key point is about the very idea of normal desire.

Desire has no single fixed path
The first essay is called The Sexual Aberrations. Freud begins with the way people spoke about sex in his day. The common view held that sexual instinct is absent in childhood, appears at puberty, and is aimed at a person of the opposite sex. Freud says that this picture is far too simple, and he sets out to show why.
To do this he splits desire into two parts. The sexual object is the person who attracts us. The sexual aim is the act toward which the instinct pushes. Freud claims that both can vary widely, and that the link between them is looser than people assume.
He then looks at what doctors of his time called inversion, which means desire for a person of the same sex. He notes that such desire occurs in people who are otherwise healthy and capable, and that it appears in some cultures as an accepted thing. For this reason he doubts it should be called a disease or a sign of degeneracy.
Freud also argues that the instinct and its object are not welded together from birth. The object is attached to the instinct, and the attachment can take different forms.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
