Für wen es gedacht ist

For young readers, parents who read aloud, and adults who enjoy a simple, story-shaped path through American history, with explorers, colonists and the making of a new nation.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

This Country of Ours is a history of the United States told for young readers by H. E. Marshall, a Scottish author who wrote many popular children's histories in the early twentieth century. Her books on Scotland, England and other lands share one aim: to make the past read like a story, with people at the center and not only dates and laws.

The book follows the American story from the first voyages across the Atlantic toward the growth of a nation. It gives you the explorers, the colonists, the quarrels with the mother country and the making of a new government, in a plain and lively voice. You get a sense of how one event led to the next. Let us begin with the world before the settlers came and the sailors who first crossed the ocean.

The land and the first voyages

The story begins with Eric the Red in Greenland and the Vikings who set out to seek distant lands. These old Norse tales take us across the western seas long before Columbus makes his voyage. The opening follows the sailors and their adventures rather than surveying the continent and its earliest peoples.

Then come the sailors. Europeans in the fifteenth century wanted a sea route to the riches of Asia, and that search brought Christopher Columbus westward. The book treats his voyages as the opening of a new chapter for the whole world.

Marshall tells these voyages as adventures. She names the captains, the ships and the hopes that drove them. A young reader can follow the sense of risk as the sailors face long journeys, storms and unfamiliar shores.

This opening matters because it explains why the later story happened at all. Kings, merchants and ordinary families all had reasons to look west. The first part of the book shows you those reasons and follows the first attempts to build colonies.
