Für wen es gedacht ist
You will enjoy this if you love Greek myth continued, Egyptian courts, sorcery and doomed romance, and if you like to hear familiar heroes like Odysseus and Helen set loose in a bold new adventure.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
The World's Desire is an adventure novel written together by H. Rider Haggard and Andrew Lang, and it picks up where Homer's Odyssey leaves off. Odysseus has come home to Ithaca at last, only to find his house in ruins and his wife gone. Here he sets out on one more voyage, this time toward Egypt and a woman who has haunted men for ages.
The tale is told as the written record of Rei, an old Egyptian priest, and it blends Greek legend with the Egypt of the Exodus. You meet a Pharaoh and a queen, plagues and a vanished people, a temple where the most beautiful woman alive sings from a tower, and a war fought on a river plain. It gives you a hero who is brave, clever and flawed, a sorceress who loves him, and a goddess who drives him on.
The first key point is the silent island, where a returning king meets nothing but ash and a promise whispered in a temple of love.

A king comes home to ashes
A ship with a single brown sail and a golden star slips toward Ithaca at dawn. On its prow stands Odysseus, grey in his beard, back from a second wandering that took him past the Gates of the Sun and the Passing Place of Souls. He expects smoke from the hills and the barking of dogs. He finds nothing at all.
The swineherd's hut is empty and the spiders have spun their webs across the door. The fountain of the Nymphs is broken and the fields are choked with weeds. In his own courtyard a great gray mound stands where the altar of Zeus once stood. It is made of ashes and burned bones, the dead of a plague who were all burned together.
A half-melted gold bracelet slides from the heap, and Odysseus knows it as the one he gave his young bride, Penelope. He falls among the ashes and longs to die. Grief takes him so deeply that he cannot weep.
Then a sound breaks the silence. In its case hangs the Bow of Eurytus, a magic bow that sings before men are slain. It sings now, and its song calls him back to life. He weeps at last, eats from the old stores, puts on the golden armor of Paris, and goes out into the moonlight with spear and bow.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
