Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who like a ghost story with a puzzle at its heart, a lively comic voice, and a London setting full of lawyers, clerks and riverside lanes, and who enjoy a young hero in love.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Uninhabited House is a ghost story by Mrs. J. H. Riddell, a Victorian novelist who wrote of London business life. It is told by Patterson, once a young clerk in the law office of Messrs. Craven and Son in Buckingham Street, near the Strand. The firm has a troublesome client, Miss Blake, and a riverside house called River Hall that no tenant can bear to keep.

The house belongs to her niece, Helena Elmsdale, whose father, a moneylender, is found dead in its library, an apparent suicide. Since then the house has stood empty again and again. Lights burn in a locked room, a figure walks the stairs, and families flee in fright. Mr. Craven, who will not hear of ghosts, suspects that someone wants the place kept vacant.

This summary follows the story from the law office to a courtroom and then to a lonely watch by the Thames. You will meet a sharp-tongued Irishwoman, a stiff colonel, a loyal doctor and a young man who risks his nerves for love. Let us begin where the trouble begins, with a house that haunts a lawyer's office.

A house that haunts a law office

The story opens in the offices of Messrs. Craven and Son, where the Uninhabited House is a standing worry. Whether it is let or empty, it gives the firm no peace. When it is let, the tenants quarrel with the firm. When it is empty, the clerks must hunt for someone willing to take it.

Mr. Craven is a kind and slow-moving man. He has a client he cannot refuse, Miss Blake, who owes him money and never repays it. He lends her five and ten pound notes, and enters them in his own private account.

The house belongs not to her but to her niece, Helena Elmsdale, who is still under age. When it is let, the income of aunt and niece rises from about sixty-five pounds a year to more than two hundred and sixty-five. When it stands empty, they live on Mr. Craven's loans.

The clerks curse the house at first. Then it becomes a sort of famous prisoner on trial, always defended by the firm. Mr. Craven laughs at ghosts, but he begins to fear that ill-meaning people are keeping the place vacant. His young clerk, Patterson, who tells the tale, starts to feel the same pull.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

What is The Uninhabited House about?

It is a Victorian ghost story. A young law clerk named Patterson agrees to live alone in River Hall, a riverside house that no tenant can bear, to find out why it is haunted and who benefits.

Who is Miss Blake in The Uninhabited House?

Miss Blake is the Irish aunt of Helena Elmsdale, who owns the house. She is a comic, muddled and ungrateful client of the law firm, always borrowing money, yet she is devoted to her niece.

Is The Uninhabited House a true story?

No, it is a novel by Mrs. J. H. Riddell, a Victorian author. It was written in the nineteenth century and uses real places such as Buckingham Street and the Thames, though the characters and events are invented.

It is both. Miss Blake, the clerks and the courtroom scenes bring plenty of humour, while the lit library, the figure on the stairs and the watcher in the lane supply the chills. The clear story is easy to follow.

What is the main message of The Uninhabited House?

The book suggests that guilt and debt can haunt a place long after the people are gone. It also shows how kindness, loyalty and courage can win out over fear and prejudice.
