A schoolboy visits his sister's dressing room
The book opens in the dressing room of Felicity, Lady Chetwode, a lovely blonde of about twenty-five. She sits before a mirror while her maid brushes her hair. Her brother Savile, sixteen and very grave, has come with two problems.
Their father is furious that Felicity's husband, Lord Chetwode, will skip the family party because a big race is being run that week. Felicity defends him with great charm. He writes her loving letters that she cannot read, since his handwriting is so bad, and she keeps them in a striped silk box.
Savile's own troubles are comic. He is engaged to a fourteen-year-old girl named Dolly Clive, yet he has fallen for the singer Adelina Patti. He also suspects that Sylvia likes their father's secretary, and Felicity laughs before she wonders if he is right.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
