In short

  • Weena is a gentle Eloi woman who becomes the inventor's companion in The Time Machine by H. G. Wells.
  • The Time Traveller saves her from drowning in a river while the other Eloi only watch.
  • She follows him, gives him flowers, and grows frightened as evening approaches.

Who Weena is

Weena belongs to the Eloi, the small, childlike people the Time Traveller meets far in the future. They live above ground in large, crumbling halls, eating fruit and spending their days playing in the sun.

She becomes his friend after he rescues her from a river where she is drowning. Her companionship gives him a personal bond with someone in this unfamiliar world.

Weena and the others in the story

Weena shows her devotion by following the Time Traveller and giving him flowers. As evening draws near, she clings to him, sharing the Eloi's deep fear of the dark.

Her fear contrasts with the ease and playfulness he first notices among her people. Through her, the apparently peaceful landscape takes on a more troubling meaning.

What Weena wants

When the Time Traveller decides to enter the underground world of the Morlocks, Weena begs him not to go. He believes that finding his missing machine means going below, but her plea does not stop him.
