Für wen es gedacht ist
For readers who love tales within tales, atmospheric dread and horror that hints more than it shows, with ancient powers, deceptive strangers and mysteries in gaslit London.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
The Three Impostors is a novel made of stories that sit inside one another. Arthur Machen published it in 1895, when London was full of gaslight, fog and fashionable talk of the occult. He built it as a chain of strange tales, told by different voices, and joined them with a thin frame of chase and deception in the city streets.
The book gives you two things. One is a set of tales about ancient powers that wait under the surface of ordinary life, in a laboratory, in a Welsh hillside, in a quiet house. The other is a game of masks. People in this book are rarely who they claim to be, and the listener must decide whom to believe. Let us begin where the book begins, with two friends and a stranger on a London street.

Two friends meet a stranger in London
The frame of the book follows two gentlemen of leisure, Dyson and Phillipps. Dyson is a man of letters with a taste for odd corners of the city. Phillipps is his friend, a more cautious and ordinary companion. They are the people through whom the reader first enters the book.
Their walk through London brings them into contact with a young man in spectacles. He seems to be a person with something to say and perhaps something to hide. From this first meeting the book sets its method. A casual encounter on the pavement opens a door, and what lies behind it is stranger than the street.
Machen lets the two friends talk, wander and judge the people they meet. That talk matters, because it trains the reader to look for what is odd in a plain remark. A detail that seems idle may be a clue, and a polite stranger may be a performer.
The frame is also a puzzle. The title warns that there are impostors in the book, and the reader begins to hunt for them at once. Each new voice arrives with a story and a claim to truth. The pleasure of the opening is that you cannot yet tell whether the speaker is a victim, a witness or a liar.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
