A dying princess confesses her secret
Paris, autumn 1701. The Princesse de Rochebazon lies dying, and Madame de Maintenon, the king's unacknowledged wife, presses her to leave her money to the Church and not to her English nephew, Martin Ashurst. The princess refuses. She says she cannot die with a lie in her heart.
He does not know how large his inheritance will be. He carries a secret of his own. He has become a Protestant, and he fears his aunt will cut him off.
The princess tells him the eldest son of the house, a Huguenot, is probably still alive. Her strength fails before she can give the name. She presses a small packet into his hand, and Martin is left alone with a conscience and a search.

Questions about Die Geißel Gottes
What is The Scourge of God about?
It is a historical romance set in France around 1701. An Englishman named Martin Ashurst searches for the lost heir of the house of Rochebazon while the Protestant Camisards rise against the king in Languedoc, and he falls in love with the Intendant's daughter.
Who is the Scourge of God in the book?
The persecuted Protestants of the Cevennes use the name for King Louis XIV, who in their eyes is sent to punish them. The epigraph at the start of the book also uses it, in words addressed to the king.
Is The Scourge of God a true story?
It mixes fact and invention. The Camisard rising, Cavalier, Roland, Baville, Montrevel and the burning of the mill at Nimes are historical, while Martin Ashurst, Urbaine Ducaire and the Rochebazon secret are invented by the author.
Who were the Camisards?
They were the Protestant mountain fighters of the Cevennes who rose in arms in 1702 after years of persecution. In the book they sing psalms, follow prophets and prophetesses, and strike from hidden caves before vanishing.
Is The Scourge of God worth reading?
It offers a clear adventure with a rescue, a disguise, a trial and a love story, set against real events. Short chapters, lively scenery and a strong sense of honour make it easy to follow.
