Für wen es gedacht ist

You will enjoy this book if you like practical psychology, early classroom science, and experiments you can try yourself. It suits teachers, students, parents and anyone curious about how habits and memory take shape.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What if you could measure yourself with a pencil, a sheet of paper and a stopwatch? In The Science of Human Nature, William Henry Pyle asks a class to make as many strokes as they can in half a minute, then repeat the test day after day.

Pyle wrote this manual for students in high schools and normal schools, the schools that trained teachers. He wants them to learn the laws of human behavior by watching themselves and their neighbors. You get a tour of the mind in ten steps, from heredity and the senses to habit, memory, reasoning and the uses of psychology. Begin with the first idea, which asks what turns knowledge into science.

Punkt 1 von 11

Psychology studies behavior by observation and experiment

Pyle begins with science itself. Knowledge becomes science only when facts are tied together by cause and effect. A scientist who finds a stone on a mountaintop sees a sea bed that was lifted high.

Psychology applies the same habit of mind to people. Stick a pin into a table leg and nothing happens. Stick it into a man's leg and he cries out and moves. The study of that sensitivity, action and consciousness is the field of psychology.

The method is observation and experiment. In the class test, students make pencil strokes for half a minute, repeat it six or eight times, and compare ranks on later days. You must check every claim against your own experience. Takeaway: psychology earns its place as a science by looking for causes and testing them.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
