Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who love frontier adventure, wild animals, treasure rumors and loyal friendships, and who enjoy following two resourceful young trackers and a seasoned explorer across unmapped country toward a creature everyone fears.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Rogue Elephant is a big-game adventure by Elliott Whitney, who died in 1913. It follows two young men from western Canada, Charlie Collins and Jack Sawtooth, who are invited to East Africa by an explorer they trust. The aim is simple. A famous German museum artist needs a family group of elephants, and the explorer will find them without a crowd of porters and servants.

You get a story of horses, oxen and wagons crossing open veldt, thick forest and baked desert. You meet lions, rhinos, pythons and buffalo, and you meet an ivory raider, an Arab trader and a rumor of a hot lake guarded by a monster. The boys learn that courage means judgment as much as nerve. The book is told in a plain, quick way, with short scenes and a good deal of humor between friends. Let us begin with the letter that starts it all.

A Letter Sends Two Boys to Africa

The story opens at the Explorers' Club in New York. Dr. Gross von Hofe, a German artist whose animal groups stand in museums around the world, has been asked by two museums to bring back elephants. He needs a guide, and he chooses Louis Schoverling, whom fellow explorers call the General. Von Hofe is horrified when Schoverling says he wants to bring two boys, but he gives in once he sees the General's confidence.

The scene then moves to Calgary, where Charlie Collins is learning the electrician's trade. Charlie came from Nova Scotia and crossed the country on his own at seventeen. A bulky letter arrives from Schoverling, telling him to quit work, come east and bring a friend named Jack Sawtooth. Charlie shouts his favorite oath, jumping sandhills, and runs to collect his pay.

Jack is a seventeen-year-old Cree from the north, raised partly at a mission school and proud of his blood. He reaches Calgary worn out from the trail, hardly believing he is going to Africa until he sees the letter and the check. Charlie hands him a suit, and the two take the train east together.

From the start, the letter lays out Schoverling's plan. The party will carry almost nothing, live off the land and wear northern moosehide moccasins instead of boots. Six steel traps from Canada are packed too, and nobody yet knows why. The friendship between the boys is quick and warm, and the story promises it will be tested.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
