Für wen es gedacht ist

For children who love gentle adventures, parents reading aloud, and anyone curious about how the Oz series grew. Readers who enjoy strange lands, comic encounters and friendships built on kindness will feel at home.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Road to Oz is a fantasy novel for young readers by L. Frank Baum, first published in 1909. It is the fifth book in his series about the Land of Oz. Baum had said he was finished with Oz after the sixth year of the first book's success, but readers kept writing to him, and he kept returning to the land and its people.

This book is a travel story. Dorothy, the Kansas girl who first reached Oz in a cyclone, sets off along a country road and ends up somewhere very far from home. Along the way she gathers companions, meets strange peoples with odd customs, and learns that a long walk is mostly a string of small choices. You get a series of comic encounters, some real danger, and a steady belief that kindness is the best protection. Let us begin where the road does, on a farm in Kansas, with a stranger who has lost his way.

A wrong turn on a Kansas road

The story opens on the farm where Dorothy Gale lives with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Dorothy is a sensible child who has already been to Oz and back, and her little dog Toto is at her side. One day a ragged traveler turns up, a man known as the Shaggy Man. He asks Dorothy the way to a town called Butterfield, which he hopes to avoid.

The scene is small, but it sets the pattern of the whole book. Dorothy is helpful by nature, so she walks with him a short way to show him the road. The road forks, and one choice leads away from the town he wants to avoid. Baum lets a simple wrong turn carry the story into the world of fairy tale, as though the countryside itself were only a thin curtain.

The Shaggy Man is an odd hero. He is poor, he is untidy, and he carries a mysterious pocket of treasures. Yet he has a courteous manner and a kind heart, and he treats Dorothy as an equal, not as a child to be managed. That respect makes him a good companion for the long walk ahead.

The lesson here is one that children will feel before they can name it. Leaving home is easy, because nothing in the setting forces you to go. The road simply keeps unrolling, and curiosity does the rest. Soon the farm is behind them, and the landscape starts to change in ways that Kansas never did.
