Worum es in diesem Buch geht
What if even war had rules that no king or church could cancel? In 1625 the Dutch lawyer Hugo Grotius, living in exile in France while the Thirty Years War raged, set out to prove exactly that. His book, The Rights of War and Peace, argues that limits on violence rest on human nature and on the agreements of nations. He builds his case from Greek and Roman writers, the Bible, Roman law and the history of many peoples.

People are made for living together
Grotius begins by asking what war is and what makes it just. Human beings, he says, have a natural desire for peaceful and orderly community. Reason and speech let them judge what is fair.
From this social nature come basic duties. People keep promises, leave alone what belongs to others and repay harm they cause. Grotius adds a bold claim. Natural law would hold even if God did not exist or did not care about human affairs.
For a reader today, the point is simple. If rules between nations rest on shared human nature, they can bind rulers of every creed. That claim is the base on which everything else in the book stands.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Later writers and diplomats built on his rules about war, treaties, property and the freedom of the seas.
