A poet's grief becomes the first verse
The epic opens with a question. Valmiki asks the sage Narad who in the world is truly virtuous, brave, truthful and kind.
Then Valmiki sees a hunter shoot one of a pair of curlews. The surviving bird cries out, and the poet's pity breaks into a rhythmic verse he names a sloka. The creator Brahma visits him and tells him to sing the full life of Rama in that same measure, promising that it will live as long as mountains and rivers.
Valmiki sees every event by inward vision. So the epic is framed as a song handed from a grieving poet to young singers, and it asks you to hear it as a living voice.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

What is the Ramayan about?
It tells how Prince Rama is exiled for fourteen years, how his wife Sita is carried off by the demon king Ravan, and how Rama gathers Vanar allies to find her and fight for her.
Who is Ravan in the Ramayan?
Ravan is the ten-headed king of Lanka. Gods and spirits cannot kill him, so Vishnu is born as a man, Rama, to meet him. He carries off Sita from the forest.
Why does Rama go into exile?
Years earlier, King Dasaratha promised Queen Kaikeyi two boons. She claims them so that her son Bharat is crowned and Rama leaves for the forest for fourteen years, and Rama accepts to keep his father's word.
Who are Kusa and Lava?
They are twin boys who learn the whole poem from Valmiki and sing it to hermits and then to Rama. Their song gives the epic its frame as a tale handed down aloud.
What is the main message of the Ramayan?
The poem praises duty, truthfulness to a given word, and loyalty between brothers, husband and wife, friends and servants. It also shows that compassion, as in the poet's first cry of pity, lies at its root.
