Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Proverbs of Scotland is a large collection of sayings gathered by Alexander Hislop and published in the early 1860s. Hislop drew on older printers and collectors who had written down Scottish proverbs before him, and he arranged the sayings in order, adding notes and a glossary to explain old words and old customs.

What do you get from it? A long run of short, sharp remarks on money, work, marriage, weather, neighbours, God and the devil. Many are in Scots, so the sound of the old speech comes through. Behind each saying stands a way of life, hard and thrifty and quick to joke. Let us begin with what a proverb is and why Hislop thought these were worth saving.

Punkt 1 von 4

A proverb packs a lifetime into a line

A proverb is a short saying that people repeat because it feels true. It is usually plain, often rhymed or balanced, and easy to remember. Hislop treats such sayings as the common property of a people. Nobody can say who first spoke them, yet everyone knows them.

He argues, in the spirit of the collectors before him, that proverbs show how ordinary people thought. Scholars wrote books of philosophy. Farmers, weavers and fishermen handed down their own wisdom in a few words. A good saying could settle an argument, calm a child or warn a young man off a foolish plan.

For a reader today, this is the first lesson of the book. Wisdom does not have to be long. A line that has passed from mouth to mouth for generations has been tested against real life, and what remains is what people found worth keeping.

Questions about Die Sprichwörter Schottlands

What is The Proverbs of Scotland about?

It is a collection of traditional Scottish sayings arranged in order by Alexander Hislop. The sayings cover money, work, weather, family, faith and human character, often with dry humour.

Who was Alexander Hislop?

He was a Scottish compiler of the nineteenth century who died in 1865. He collected and arranged Scottish proverbs, building on earlier printed collections, and is remembered mainly for this book.

Are the proverbs written in Scots?

Many are given in Scots, the old speech of Scotland. Short words and homely pictures make the sayings blunt and quick, and reading them aloud lets their meaning and humour come through.

When was The Proverbs of Scotland published?

It appeared in the early 1860s. Hislop drew on older collectors and on sayings still spoken in his time, so the book records wisdom that is much older than the date of printing.

Is The Proverbs of Scotland worth reading today?

Yes, if you like language, folklore or short, witty remarks. It is best read in small doses, and it shows how ordinary Scots once thought about work, money, faith and each other.
