Worum es in diesem Buch geht
The Oakdale Affair is a comic mystery adventure by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the American author who created Tarzan and who died in 1950. It is a short novel set in a quiet Midwestern town and on the muddy country roads around it. Burroughs wrote it for readers who like quick action, a shiver or two, and a lot of fun along the way.
In a single night, the home of the town's bank president is robbed, a miser is beaten, a well-dressed man-about-town is found dead by the road, and the banker's daughter goes missing. Add a thunderstorm, a deserted farmhouse with a bloody past, and a clanking chain in the dark. At the center are a frightened young thief and a gentle, poetry-quoting tramp who cannot say why he feels bound to protect him. You will meet outlaws with colorful nicknames, a farm boy chasing a reward, and a detective who never guesses. Let us begin where the trouble begins, with a burglar crossing a moonlit lawn.

A nervous burglar leaves Oakdale
The story opens on a house on a hill in Oakdale, where the family of Jonas Prim, president of the First National Bank, sits at dinner. A slim youth in a borrowed suit and a checked cap crosses the lawn, slips through a library window, and climbs a back stairway. He goes straight to the rooms of Abigail Prim, the banker's nineteen year old daughter, as if he knows them well.
He opens a hidden wall safe behind a tapestry and fills his pockets with bills and jewels. From a dressing table drawer he takes a small nickel-plated pistol. Then an elbow knocks a silver candlestick to the floor, and he hides, rigid with fear, behind a screen. Only a laugh from downstairs tells him that no one has heard.
On the way out, he stops at the library door and listens to the family. Mrs. Prim, the second wife, is pleased that Abigail has gone to visit the sister of Samuel Benham, the older, wealthy man she has chosen for her stepdaughter. Jonas grunts that Benham is bald, rheumatic, and old enough to be the girl's father. He wishes his wife would let the girl pick her own mate.
The young thief walks out of town and learns that the country at night is not friendly. Frogs sound like people, a farm dog's savage bark sends him racing down the road, and a great bull rises beside a straw stack. By the time he sees a glow through the cracks of a ruined barn, he is so lonely that any company will do. That need leads him into the wrong company altogether.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
