Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who like fast adventure, pirates and head hunters, mad scientists, tropical rivers, and a love story where a hero must prove his worth through loyalty, courage and a strong sense of fair play.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Monster Men is a jungle adventure by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author best known for the Tarzan books. It opens in a quiet American university town, where Professor Arthur Maxon has learned to create living beings by chemistry. His latest success frightens him so badly that he sails away with his daughter Virginia, but not far enough to give up his work.

In the seas of Malaya he builds a hidden camp on a small island off the coast of Borneo. He brings a ship's crew, an ambitious assistant named von Horn, a heavy chest, and a row of glass vats. Pirates circle the island. A quiet Chinese cook watches everyone and says very little. And in the laboratory, one new creature is growing who will be unlike all the others, and who will upset every plan the professor has made.

You get raids, kidnappings, a ship wrecked in a monsoon storm, and chases through the rivers and forests of Borneo. Under the action runs one steady question: what makes a person a person? Burroughs lets a young giant with no past ask it, and the answer he finds may surprise you. Let us begin with the secret the professor carries out of his workshop.

A scientist hides a secret too terrible

The story opens in a locked workshop in Ithaca, New York. Professor Maxon drops the last pieces of a body into a vat of acid, then sinks into a chair and sobs without tears. His daughter Virginia knocks at the door and scolds him for spending three days there without food or sleep. He promises to finish by noon and then take her away on a long holiday.

Maxon is a gentle, wealthy man who taught natural science at Cornell, and the small salary meant nothing to him. He took up biology to help humanity in a practical way. In secret, with his great inherited wealth, he has done what no other scientist can do: he has made life by chemical means. Even his daughter does not know.

The body in the workshop is his newest creature, which gasped once or twice and died. It looked like a man, but a twisted and ugly one. No police officer would ever believe the truth, and he fears they would hang him or lock him up with the criminally insane. So he scrubs away every trace and leaves the room clean.

The professor and Virginia leave town quietly and sail on a long ocean voyage. He swears never to meddle again with the secrets of creation. But as his health and nerves recover, hope returns, and the dead creature begins to look less like a horror and more like a first step toward a triumph he can show the world.

He decides that no civilized place is safe for his work. On the hot, idle days in the China Sea, a plan grows into an obsession. At Manila he suddenly turns the ship back to Singapore, and Virginia, who has felt a gap open between them since the three days in the workshop, is too proud to ask why.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
