Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love puzzles solved by reasoning, detective short stories that fit into an evening, or a first look at Holmes and Watson's cases.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of detective stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. The tales first appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1892 and 1893 and were gathered into a book in 1894. Each story is told by Dr John Watson, the friend who shares rooms with Holmes at 221B Baker Street in London.

The book gives you a run of cases that differ a great deal. You also learn something of Holmes himself, his early days and his brother. Then the book builds toward a last conflict with an enemy who is his equal. Let us start with the story in which a dog does nothing at all.

A silent dog solves Silver Blaze

The collection opens with Silver Blaze. A famous racehorse has vanished from a Dartmoor stable, and his trainer, John Straker, lies dead on the moor with a head wound. The horse's owner is Colonel Ross, who is sure of his facts and impatient with outsiders. Inspector Gregory has arrested a suspect, a young man who was in the area that night.

Holmes does not rush about the moor in a frenzy. He walks the ground, asks small questions, and looks at things others walk past. He asks what the stable dog did on the night of the crime. The answers stir Gregory's interest.

This case introduces the habit that makes Holmes what he is. He does not only study what happened. He also studies what failed to happen. The dog gives the story its best-known remark.

The story also shows Holmes at his most theatrical. He keeps his conclusions back, lets the Colonel doubt him, and then proves the matter in front of everyone. Watson, as always, follows a step behind. His confusion lets you follow along and try to guess before Holmes speaks.

Silver Blaze rewards a second reading, because every clue is fairly placed. You simply need to notice what Holmes notices.
