Zusammenfassung von Das Leben Jesu
Für wen es gedacht ist
For readers curious about the historical Jesus, the history of biblical criticism, or nineteenth century European thought, and for lovers of vivid, picture-making prose.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
In 1863 a French scholar published a book that set off one of the loudest quarrels of the nineteenth century. Ernest Renan wrote The Life of Jesus as the biography of a man, not a creed about a god. He used the Gospels as sources, but not as proof of miracles. Begin with the man who wrote it, because his path explains the book.

A priest in training becomes a historian
Ernest Renan is born in 1823 in a small town in Brittany. The Church sees a gifted boy and sends him toward the priesthood, and in Paris he learns Hebrew and other ancient languages.
Those languages undo his faith. Reading the Hebrew Bible closely, and then German critics, he finds he cannot hold the Church's teachings in good conscience. He leaves the seminary in 1845 with sadness, not anger.
In 1860 he travels to the Near East with his sister Henriette, who dies in Lebanon in 1861. In his first lecture as professor he calls Jesus an incomparable man, and he loses his chair. The book is born in that storm.

Questions about Das Leben Jesu
What is The Life of Jesus by Ernest Renan about?
It is a biography of Jesus written as history. Renan follows him from boyhood in Galilee through his preaching and the opposition he met to his last days in Jerusalem, treating him as a remarkable man and not as a miracle worker.
Why was Renan's Life of Jesus so controversial?
Renan denied that miracles can be accepted as historical fact and presented Jesus as a human being, not God. The Catholic Church condemned the book, and Renan lost his teaching post at the Collège de France soon after it appeared.
When was The Life of Jesus written and published?
It was published in France in 1863. Renan wrote much of it in Syria and Lebanon in 1860 and 1861, during an archaeological mission, and it opened his seven-volume History of the Origins of Christianity.
Is Renan's Life of Jesus historically accurate?
Renan used the Gospels carefully and added imagination to fill gaps, so modern historians dispute many details and consider his portrait too sentimental, though his questions about sources still matter.
Is The Life of Jesus hard to read?
No. Renan writes in a clear, flowing, literary style, with vivid descriptions of landscape and people. The story and arguments are easy to follow.
