Worum es in diesem Buch geht
The Lair of the White Worm is a horror novel by Bram Stoker, the Irish writer who gave the world Dracula. It was published in 1911, a year before his death, when his health was poor. Stoker blends English folklore, Roman and Saxon history, mesmerism and the old fear that something ancient sleeps beneath quiet fields. The result is a fast, strange adventure that moves between country-house manners and open nightmare.
The story is set in the English Midlands, in a district that was once the kingdom of Mercia. A young Australian arrives to join his great-uncle and finds that his new neighbours carry odd histories. You also get a book that shows how Victorian and Edwardian readers feared the past, the foreign and the power of one mind over another. Let us begin with the young man who steps off the ship.

A young Australian comes to Mercia
The novel opens with Adam Salton, a young man from Australia, arriving in England. His great-uncle, Richard Salton, has invited him to live at Lesser Hill, a house in the English Midlands.
At Lesser Hill he meets Sir Nathaniel de Salis, an elderly scholar and a friend of the family. Sir Nathaniel knows the history of the region better than anyone. He tells Adam about the Romans who came here, the Saxons who followed, and the old kingdom of Mercia that gave the district its character. For Adam, the land is not just scenery. It is layered with ages, and each layer has left stories behind.
Richard Salton introduces him to the neighbours, and the cast of the book begins to appear. There are the Watford cousins, Mimi and Lilla, who live with their grandfather at Mercy Farm. There is the grand house of Castra Regis, whose owners have long lived abroad. There is also a place called Diana's Grove, home to a striking widow named Lady Arabella March.
Stoker uses this opening to set up an outsider's eyes. Adam does not know the local legends, so the reader learns them as he does.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
