Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love witty satire, French history, and the lighter side of the Enlightenment, with bawdy comedy, courtly secrets, and sharp jokes about vanity and hypocrisy.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Indiscreet Toys is a short comic novel by Denis Diderot, first published in 1748 without his name on it. Diderot was a young writer then, still years away from the great Encyclopedia. The book dresses up the court of Louis XV as an Eastern kingdom called Congo, and it plays a wicked game with the secrets of that court.

The idea is simple and rude. A ruler is given a magic ring that makes the most private part of a woman tell the truth about her love life. What follows is a string of scandalous scenes, a running joke about vanity and hypocrisy, and a good deal of talk about books, music and ideas. You get a sharp, funny look at how people behave when they think no one is listening. Let us begin with the ring itself.

A magic ring makes secrets speak

The story opens in Congo, a kingdom ruled by Sultan Mangogul. He is young, bored, and used to a court that flatters him. His favorite is the clever Mirzoza, who can talk with him as an equal and who tends to say what she thinks.

A genie named Cucufa gives the sultan a ring. When Mangogul turns its stone toward a woman, her most intimate part speaks aloud and tells the truth about her adventures. The women of the court cannot stop it, and they cannot lie their way out of it. The jewels of the title are exactly these talking parts.

The setup works like a trap sprung on a whole society. Reputation is the currency of court life, and the ring makes reputation worthless in an instant. Diderot uses the idea to ask what remains of polite manners once the truth is forced into the open. The question is funny, and it is also pointed.

Mangogul treats the ring as a toy at first. He tests it for amusement and for proof, often with Mirzoza listening and commenting. That pairing gives the book its rhythm. The sultan acts, and the favorite reacts with a sharper mind than his.

That’s 1 of 4 key points.

Questions about Die indiskreten Spielzeuge

What is The Indiscreet Toys about?

It is a satirical novel in which Sultan Mangogul of Congo gets a magic ring that makes women's private parts speak the truth about their love lives, exposing the hypocrisy of his court.

Is Congo in The Indiscreet Toys a real place?

No. Congo is a disguise for France under Louis XV. The Eastern setting was a fashionable device that let Diderot mock the Paris court while keeping some cover.

When was The Indiscreet Toys written and published?

Diderot published it in 1748, without his name on it. It is a fiction and a satire, not a true story, though it aims at real habits of French society.

Why is The Indiscreet Toys considered risqué?

Its central joke is frankly sexual, since the talking jewels tell of affairs and desires. Diderot uses that bawdy device to attack vanity, false piety and social pretense.

Is The Indiscreet Toys worth reading today?

Yes, if you enjoy witty satire and want to see Diderot's early voice. It mixes comedy with talk about music, art and philosophy, and some episodes are bawdy.
