Worum es in diesem Buch geht
P. T. Barnum was the best-known showman in the United States when he wrote The Humbugs of the World, which appeared in 1865. He had made his name with museum exhibits, tours and publicity stunts, and critics often called him a humbug himself. Here he turns the word around. He sets out to show readers how tricksters, quacks, false prophets and counterfeit wonders have fooled people in every age.
The book is a guided tour of deception, told by a man who knew the tricks of attention from the inside. You will hear what Barnum means by humbug, how old frauds shaped new ones, and why clever people are fooled as easily as simple ones. You will also meet his argument that the public must learn to ask for proof. Let us start with the word itself, because Barnum questions how dictionaries define it.

Humbug is a slippery word
Barnum begins by asking what humbug really is. In his view, a good deal of humbug is simply the art of drawing a crowd, with bright signs, bold claims and a little mystery.
But he does not let himself off lightly. He admits that he has used such methods, and he is frank that the public sometimes pays to be amused by claims that are not quite true. What he condemns is the deceiver who takes money or trust and gives nothing real in return. That is the line he draws, and it runs through the whole book.
This opening matters because it sets his tone. He is not a preacher standing above the crowd. He writes as an insider who knows how easy it is to arouse curiosity, and who knows what curiosity can be made to do.
For a reader today, the lesson is plain. Ask whether a claim is selling you an experience you can judge for yourself, or asking you to hand over money, health or faith on promises you cannot check. Barnum thinks that one question separates amusement from fraud, and he returns to it again and again.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
