Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The House on the Cliff is a Hardy Boys mystery written under the name Franklin W. Dixon, the shared pen name used for the series. It follows the teenage brothers Frank and Joe Hardy, sons of the detective Fenton Hardy, as a Saturday outing on motorcycles near Bayport on Barmet Bay turns into a case with real danger. It gives you a fast, clear adventure with a haunted house, a boat chase, a mystery man, and a trail that grows more serious with every chapter.

The story begins at the Polucca place, a stone house on a cliff where a miser was murdered two years before. People say it is haunted, and the boys soon hear why. In this summary you will meet the brothers and their friends, follow the first strange events, and see how the clues begin to point toward the bay itself. The ending stays hidden, so you can enjoy the surprises on your own. Let us start where the boys do, on the shore road, with a dare to visit the haunted house.

A haunted house dares five boys

On a bright June Saturday, five Bayport High School boys ride their motorcycles along the shore road beside Barmet Bay. Frank Hardy leads, his younger brother Joe rides close behind, and their friends Chet Morton, Jerry Gilroy and Biff Hooper complete the group. They have no plan until Chet suggests a visit to Polucca's place, the stone house on the cliff.

The others tell Jerry, who is new in town, what they know. Felix Polucca was an old miser who kept fierce dogs and shunned visitors, and he was found shot in his kitchen two years ago. No money was ever found, and people report odd lights at night. One motorist even saw an old man at an upstairs window who vanished when the man called out.

The boys reach the property just as storm clouds darken the sky. The lane is choked with weeds, a rusty gate hangs on chains, and a loose shutter bangs in the wind. Inside, the dusty rooms are empty except for a rat in the parlor fireplace. Then a wild, quavering shriek rings out from somewhere upstairs.

Jerry, Chet and Biff run outside, but the Hardys stay and then persuade the others to come back. The brothers are known in town as young detectives, trained by their father, who once worked for the New York police. Frank does not believe in ghosts and wants to know who is making the sound. A sudden downpour sends all five into the kitchen, where a second shriek, a slammed door and a howl follow. As the boys run down a side hall, half the ceiling crashes down on them.

Questions about Das Haus auf der Klippe

What is The House on the Cliff about?

It is about Frank and Joe Hardy, who visit a haunted house near Bayport, rescue a wounded man from a burning boat, and then search for their missing father while tracking a ring of smugglers on Barmet Bay.

Who is Snackley in The House on the Cliff?

Ganny Snackley is a notorious smuggler of drugs, the leader of a ring that Fenton Hardy knows from his work. His name, spoken by a half-drowned stranger, first tells the Hardys that something serious is happening on the bay.

Do I need to read The Tower Treasure first?

No. This book recalls the brothers' first case and some of its people, but it introduces everyone clearly as the story goes on. New readers can follow the plot easily and enjoy it by itself.

Is the haunted house in the book a real place?

No, the Polucca place is part of the story's invented setting of Bayport and Barmet Bay. The Hardy Boys books are fiction, and the cliff, the cove and the town are made up for the adventure.

Is The House on the Cliff easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that it is made easy by its short chapters, plain language and brisk pace. Nearly every chapter ends on a hook, so readers of many ages can move through it quickly.
