Worum es in diesem Buch geht

A rich family is being shot, one member at a time, inside its own gloomy mansion. The Greene Murder Case is a detective novel by S. S. Van Dine, the pen name of the American art critic Willard Huntington Wright. It came out in 1928 as the third book about the amateur detective Philo Vance. Wright turned to detective fiction after a long illness and then built it with care. The story takes place in New York, where the Greenes live under one roof, crowded, quarrelsome and full of secrets. The police cannot see who is behind the shootings or why. Let us step through the front door.

A shooting at the Greene mansion

The District Attorney, John F.-X. Markham, is called to a shooting inside the Greene mansion, a large old house that stands apart from the modern city. He brings his friend Philo Vance and the narrator, a lawyer who records the events.

Julia Greene, the eldest child, is dead. A younger sister, Ada, is wounded but lives. Nobody seems to have seen anything, and the household reacts with fear and sharp tempers.

Vance pays less attention to the bullets than to how each person behaves when a question is put to them. A house where people are shot in the same manner suggests a plan. Who in this family could want the others gone, and why now?
