Worum es in diesem Buch geht
A ghost may frighten you, make you laugh, or break your heart, and in Florence Marryat's hands it often does all three. Marryat was a Victorian novelist and journalist who died in 1899. Her collection gathers ten pieces, mostly ghost stories and tales of love, jealousy and secrets. They are set in London villas, an Indian garrison, a Derbyshire country house and a lonely hill castle. Each is told as if by a fireside, with a plain household fact set beside a shiver. Let us begin with a publisher in Streatham.

A publisher is haunted by an old friend
In The Ghost of Charlotte Cray, Mr. Sigismund Braggett is a prosperous publisher of forty. He has a pretty villa in Streatham and a wife of three months, the charming Emily. Yet he sits gloomy in his study, because of a secret he never told her.
The secret is Charlotte Cray, a clever woman writer who did odd jobs for his firm. She was sure he meant to marry her, and he let her think so because she was useful and cheap. When he married Emily, she sent angry letters and demanded to meet Mrs. Braggett.
Then a black-bordered letter says Miss Cray has died and been buried. Braggett feels pity and relief, but also blames himself for neglecting her. But his clerks tell him she called yesterday, veiled and very pale. The tale is comic, yet the dread grows with each visit he makes.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

What is The Ghost of Charlotte Cray and Other Stories about?

Is the book a true story?
The collection mixes tales with travel sketches and an essay. One narrator insists her Indian story is true and the names are changed.
Who is Charlotte Cray?
She is a woman writer who worked for the publisher Sigismund Braggett and hoped to marry him. After he marries Emily Primrose, she sends letters and calls at his office, determined to meet his wife. The title story follows what happens after her death.
Is it easy to read?
Yes, the stories are told in a clear, lively voice, often by a speaker who addresses you directly. Each tale is short enough to finish in one sitting, and the humor and brisk scenes keep the pages turning.
